Looney: About L.A. Radio

JULY 26TH, 1999

Dr. Pottymouth! KRLA’s Kenny "Mr. Traffic" Morse was chatting with Dr. Toni Grant on his weekend KRLA show, when all of a sudden they got into a little brouhaha about teen drivers.

Grant insisted that youngsters should have certain grades before they can get drivers licenses. When Morse told her that there is no correlation between a teenager with good grades and their ability to drive, she said "Well, that’s just bulls---!" and it actually did not get bleeped.

According to Morse, during a commercial break, Mizz Grant told Mr. Traffic, "Well, it’s your show, not mine. I don’t have to worry about it."

Not very womanly!

Syndication on the way for The Traffic Dude? A few students talking out of turn in traffic school have told me that KRLA's Kenny Morse, "Mr. Traffic" is close to doing a syndication deal.

Mr. Traffic was contacted by Loon-E-mail for comment, but Morse responded in code — one in which I did not understand.

Morse has a quirky, kitchy show on 1110 KRLA every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. He brings in marquee guests and talks to them about driving issues!

Last Saturday, Morse chatted with L.A. Police Chief Bernard Parks about L.A.'s driving issues. While he had him at the mic, he did a bang-up job grilling the chief about the engorgement of recent police scandals!

Strangely, I phoned in to the Mr. Traffic show on KRLA to ask Chief Parks a question, and the KRLA screener answered the phone by saying: "KRLA, can you please choke hold?"

Quake Talk, Quake Coverage. When the 7.0 Hector Mine Earthquake '99 hit last Friday night/Saturday morning, radio was the only place to turn. TV people were all asleep and had to get out of bed, put on make-up, do their hair, get their nails done, call the limo service, and put on their Armani TV suit uniforms. Infomercials ran for quite some time on local TV as Southern California citizens turned to their radios.

On KRLA, Doug Stephan was live but doing his syndicated "Good Day" show from out of town. KRLA's Kenny "Mr. Traffic" Morse hopped out of bed, jumped into a telephone booth, put on a cape, and morphed into "Mr. Earthquake." He then flew to KRLA to give updates on the half-hour news breaks and on Doug Stephan's show as well!

Mr. Traffic Jams For One Year! Mr. Traffic is celebrating his one-year anniversary on KRLA in December. For a weekend show, Mr. Traffic (Kenny Morse) has had more star names on his "celebrity onramp" than anybody in radio!

Morse’s show is not about cars, it's about traffic issues. In this police state that we live in, everybody can relate to traffic tickets, and everybody has questions about how to beat ’em or deal with ’em!

When Kenny started out, he was rough around the edges. Thanks to Morse's hustle, show-business contacts and plain hard work, the show has really gotten much better. (It would be better suited for the crazy young 20-something, 30-something drivers on 97.1, but it's on KRLA for some reason.)

Premiere to Launch Dees Syndication: Kiss FM (KISF 103.5 FM) in Las Vegas will be the first affiliate to carry the new syndicated "Rick Dees in the Morning Show."

The legendary deejay will continue to anchor this new project out of his KIIS (102.7 FM) studios in beautiful downtown Burbank. The fabulous Premiere Radio Networks in Royal Oaks will handle the syndication. Premiere also handles Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Art Bell and Michael Reagan in the sociopolitical anti-homo-UFO talk arenas. They syndicate Jim Rome's sports talk show, Warren Eckstein's doggy talk show, and Phil Hendrie's radio puppet show.

Dees already makes more money than anybody — anybody — in radio. Yes, Rick Dees makes more $$$$ than Rush, more $$$$ than Howard, more $$$$ than Dr. Laura, more $$$$ than Stephanie Miller, more $$$$ than Brian Whitman, and more $$$$ than Mr. Traffic.

THANKS TO TOMM FOR THE WONDERFUL PRESS!!! (and Tomm.....ANYONE makes more money than I do! :-)
