LANDMARK LEGISLATION HAS BEEN
SIGNED BY THE CALIFORNIA
GOVERNOR TO CREATE INSURANCE
COVERAGE FOR THE POOR

Governor Gray Davis signed landmark legislation which will offer affordable car insurance LIABILITY coverage for people who's annual income is 150% of the federal poverty level, or below. That means a family of 3 would qualify for a policy with an income of about $21,000.

This is a pilot program for Los Angeles and San Francisco residents to try to stem the tide of uninsured motorists, which climbs to about 90% in poor communities.  It is estimated that about 25% of all licensed drivers in California are uninsured.  100% of the UN-licensed drivers are driving around uninsured.

The policies would cost about $450 per year for most good drivers, and $562 for single male drivers between 19-24.  The coverage will be:

$10,000 per injury
$20,000 per crash (total amount of passengers)
$3,000 property damage

This is as opposed to the standard coverage for the rest of the drivers which is:
$15,000/$30,000/$5,000

I will be watching carefully to see if this first of it's kind program makes a dent in our HORRIBLE uninsured motorists stats.
