Jim Ports currently serves as the Deputy Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). He was appointed by the Secretary of Transportation with the consent of the President. The Deputy Administrator serves as the agency's Chief Operating Officer and assists the Administrator in the overall executive direction of NHTSA Headquarters and field personnel operations.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Administrator, Mr. Ports served as the Deputy Secretary for the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). As Deputy Secretary, Mr. Ports served as the Chief Operating Officer for a 9,200- employee department with and annual budget of $3.69 billion dollars. He was responsible for oversight and operations for all of Maryland’s transportation modes including:

·        State Highways Administration,

·        Motor Vehicle Administration and

·        Emergency Management/Homeland Security

 

From 1991 thru 2002, Mr. Ports served in the Maryland General Assembly as a member of the House of Delegates.  He was the ranking minority member of the Ways and Means Committee and served on numerous subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Transportation. 

 

While serving in the House of Delegates and prior to his appointment to the MDOT,
Mr. Ports was employed by the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. 
During his twenty-one year career, he rose through the ranks and held
various positions including Supervisor of the Industrial and Commercial Gas Field Operations.

 

Mr. Ports served in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant (E5) and was a Crew Chief on the CH-46 Helicopter. He is also a life member in the VFW.  Throughout his life he has served in many capacities for the benefit of his community and state.  Mr. Ports is an avid soccer fan. He and his wife Linda enjoy coaching and watching their three children play various sports, especially soccer.
